A Mediterranean Hillside Home In Need Of A Kitchen
This elegant Mediterranean hillside home was in wonderful shape except for the kitchen.
The existing kitchen had old appliances, dated laminate counter tops, painted cabinets with
dated pulls, windows that didn't match the rest of the house, poor and inadequate lighting,
old flooring and cut up spaces. The clients love to cook and entertain and they wanted a
completely new warm bright, cheerful and fun kitchen. They are both gourmet cooks and
wanted the kitchen to have state-of-the-art appliances. The kitchen needed to flow smoothly,
to have a comfortable window seat and informal area to sit at a counter.
The architects immediately determined that the kitchen should be enlarged by removing the
wall that divided the space and to re configure the awkward doorway to the basement level
below. New black metal windows were specified to match the windows throughout the
house. Maple cabinets were chosen for their beauty and warmth. The African slate tile
flooring compliments the gold tones in the cabinetry. Rich creamy Italian tiles were selected for the countertops with soft pastel accent
tiles for the splash. These subtle colors draw you to their deep glazed crackled finish.
A bright partially pounded and polished copper hood was custom made with a copper shelf below for herbs, oils and spices. Copper
pots and pans are also displayed. A new built-in side board shows off a collection of wine glasses and other glass ware. The pastel
accent tile is used as a splash of color and feature of the cabinet. Book shelves finish this built-in furniture to display art objects and for
easy access to numerous cookbooks. New Dacor double ovens, a Wolfe range, SubZero refrigerator and large stainless steel sink have
been well broken now -- who could resist throwing a party? |
