Remodeled Single Family Residence, Tiburon
What is one of the most common reasons a young couple decide to remodel a home? A baby is on the way! Stuart and Dana had lived in their ranch style home for a number of years - doing a little work here and there and dreaming about making it a home which would be more in keeping with their taste and sense of style. Stuart knew that he disliked the bland entry - which made no statement. He hated the fact that as soon as you walked into the house you looked directly at the back of the living room fireplace mass. Stuart and Dana agreed that they didn't like the feel of the side hallway connecting the entry to the kitchen and bedroom wing beyond. And the kitchen - did it ever need to be updated and enlarged!
Staurt and Dana had in mind a home with a bit of a European feel without trying to be a poor copy. Working closely with the architect, they chose to update the feel of the home by changing the wood siding to stucco and the asphalt shingle roof to a clay tile look. In order to break up the long lines of the roof a cupola was added over the living room and dormers added along the bedroom hallway. In addition to interupting the lines of the home these elements add character and bring dramatic light into the home. New concrete columns at the entry and a custom arched and beveled glass door create a stately welcome for all friends and visitors.
The family room was expanded to allow for enlargment of the kitchen. The kitchen now opens to the family room, commands a glorious view of the bay, and has ample elbow room for a growing family. While construction was underway Stuart decided that he had never been happy with the master bedroom layout - could the architect give it some thought? In a matter of days the roof was torn off, the room enlarged and reconfigured virtually instantly creating a spacious master suite appropriate to this comfortable home.
Staurt - comment to the architect: "Your design of our house in Tiburon is so right on. I continue to be very impressed with your work, even more so after living in the house for several months. It continues to get better and better."
