He is British and she is Japanese. He has family heirloom antiques and tapestries handed down over the generations from England. She has ornate tables, chairs and sideboards, wood carvings and kimonos from Indonesia, China and Japan.

Their home is dated with bleached oak cabinets, old pendant light fixtures, fireplaces with no mantels – just some marble on the wall with quarter round trim. The home lacks harmony without any sense to the fusion of these two cultures under one roof. Family and friends from far-away places visit often and stay for extended visits but the home lacks guest quarters. An addition and remodel is just what this home needed!

The Senn and Hendromartono family is very close. Two teenaged daughters spend a lot of time with Mom and Dad all congregated in a small hallway to work on computers or to watch a DVD. Inge Hendromartono stays up late creating designs for their internationally recognized handbags. Her computer is in the master bedroom and her late night inspiration often competes with Christopher’s need to get a good night’s sleep. And, as is the case for many working moms - Inge has no place to call her own. She has no place to quietly escape from the demands of a thriving international business and busy teenage girls.

The Senn Hendromartono family decided it was time to pull the home together and to make it work for them. A 1,600 foot 4th level addition was excavated from unused space below the home. The addition has a spectacular media room/family room, and adjacent 4 person home office, two full guest suites, and a meditation/quiet room for Inge. Each new room flows out to a newly created terrace and zen garden complete with a babbling stream and pond, spa and beautiful garden.

The new family/media room has an Asian motif. In spite of its function as an activity room it has a quiet design. New built-in cherry cabinetry is built with an Asian tansu aesthetic. The doors and drawers are crafted and house a flat-screened TV, stereo equipment including a turntable and old LP collection, and DVD storage. The Asian style cabinet pulls were created for this home. Carefully crafted magnificent Shoji style pocketing doors give privacy to the home. A jet-lagged guest from overseas can retreat to their suite while a group of teenagers watch a movie in the media room. Christopher can work in his computer without distraction in the home office and Inge can retreat into her meditation room. All separate. When the Shoji doors are pocketed away a large space is created for the family to spread out. The Shoji doors are crafted with grooves that disappear into the ceiling and floor plans and glide effortlessly into place.

The guest suites are warm and comfortable. Each one is designed to make a guest feel at home. In one bathroom the shower is curved with horizontal shower heads . . . . inviting a guest into the lap of luxury. Each bathroom has heated towel bars – so welcome on cold winter nights. The outdoor spa is just steps outside one bedroom with spectacular views of San Francisco Bay.

Now Europe and Asia are merged under one roof.
