This busy client is a high profile corporate businesswoman. She puts in extremely long workdays and has a demanding travel schedule.  Her goals were to give her home an updated and clean look as well and to create a restful retreat from her busy life.  In addition, she wanted to be proud of her home when she hosted business dinners or family functions.  The eighties home was dreary and dated and in no way reflected the sophisticated taste of the owner.

She had a number of Asian pieces of furniture and artwork that she very much loved.  These favored pieces gave the design team ideas for a sense of direction.  The theme became East meets West.

The home office, kitchen, family room, breakfast room and dining room were all to be given a more contemporary feel.  The dated dark louvered cabinets, used brick fireplace, and the black and white checkered linoleum tile flooring all needed to be replaced.  The rooms were stripped to the studs but the spaces remained.  Craftsmen and women contributed to execute the design team’s vision.  Deep cherry “tansu-inspired” cabinetry were custom designed.  The TV and stereo equipment, CD and DVD storage, and kitchen and office appliances were all built in.  All conveniences are a touch or pull away, behind elegantly proportioned and minimally detailed door and drawer fronts throughout.

Innovative materials included custom distressed copper hardware that set off the cabinetry like subtle and beautiful jewelry, designed by Misugi Design.  Other appliance and drawer pulls were coordinated and plated to match the finish of the copper.  Pam Morris created elegant floating light fixtures over the dining and breakfast tables.  Eric Powell created metal straps that appear to hold together joined wood posts with authentic Asian details. Eric also made metal brackets to support the elevated counter at the island.  Hardwood floors were carefully distressed, pegged and then stained to tie into the overall feeling of the home.

Informed and inspired by the home’s natural surroundings, the design team chose a soft palette of soothing earthen green tones to work with the deep reds of the cherry cabinets, flooring and copper.  A custom wool area rug, soft leather upholstery, and soft green toned granite bar countertop and green slate tile backsplashes soften the space with a wash of calm complimentary colors.

The elegant design and high-end construction details create a restful retreat. Our happy homeowner returns from her daily grind to her zen-like oasis.
