This farmhouse was built by the Goodwin family in the late1800's about an hour north of San Francisco in Penngrove. The stately farmhouse, large barn, egg house and various out buildings are set on a beautiful piece of property. Tall redwoods, bays and oaks surround the home creating a private and serene setting. The Davison family bought the home several years ago and started cleaning it up. They painted the home, refinished floors, replaced light fixtures and updated the wiring throughout the house. The back porch was rebuilt. And, they dreamed of the day they could remodel and enlarge their kitchen.

Finally, the day arrived when the new kitchen could be tackled. The Davison's love to entertain; family and friends drop in often. Kerry is known to have fresh chocolate chip cookies most of the time and if not will certainly whip up a batch! Don takes charge of the Barbeque and bartends! With two growing sons and a young daughter and all of the kids friends visiting often- that new kitchen was very much needed. The small space just did not accommodate the family's needs.

Fortunately, Kerry's sister just happens to be architect Colleen Mahoney who is well-recognized for her award-winning remodeling work, particularly kitchens. In fact, just a few years ago Colleen co-authored the book Great Kitchens At Home With America's Top Chefs. Colleen was happy to work on the design on this beautiful historic home.

The challenge was to enlarge the kitchen with a design carefully fitting in with the style of the home. Very tall ceiling heights were matched. The dominant pattern of the double-hung windows was repeated. The pitch of the main entry roof was matched with the new addition roof. The siding and stone base are identical to the original materials, the trim and moldings tie
in exactly.

Kerry was determined to reuse the original farmhouse gas range and ovens. It became the centerpiece of the kitchen design. A large granite topped island was custom made for extra layout and work surface. The side of the kitchen facing the garden is the in kitchen family breakfast area. The granite countertops are grey with beautiful red veining which ties into the dramatic red walls.

A farm style sink was chosen for its appropriateness to the home and the open dish display accents this heavy work area. The cabinets were custom made by Hamilton's cabinet shop in Petaluma and hand painted to look original and distressed by local painter/artist Tom Williams. The white tile backsplash has a few red glass tiles as accents above the range and sink.

This kitchen is truly the center of the home. A noteworthy, remarkable project executed with great care by each craftsman involved, the owner and architect.
