Provide Barrier-Free Access For Daughter
The challenge was to design an addition to an existing three-story home which would provide
barrier-free access for daughter, Anna. A new single-level addition was created with Anna's bedroom
and barrier-free bathroom, as well as a new kitchen, family gathering area, a new accessible ramp and
deck viewing the garden. The main living level of the existing three-story house was several feet
above grade and inaccessible to Anna. The kitchen and dining room were on the lower floor and the
only bathroom was on the upper floor of the home.
The new addition was elevated to tie into the main living level of the existing house. The placement of
the addition was impacted by the desire to preserve several beautiful, mature trees. The addition was
wedged between these trees and along the narrow side yard. This lineal addition fully addresses the
nicely landscaped yard, brick path and patio, and allows light to penetrate the rooms from all sides.
We wanted to ensure that Anna would be active in family activities, so the kitchen and the family
gathering area were centrally located adjacent to her new bedroom/bathroom suite. The family also
wanted direct access to the yard for Anna, so a long deck was built at the level of the addition for
gathering. This deck connects to the ramp so Anna can easily access the yard. We also designed a
barrier-free bathroom with a wheel-in shower and room for a special water closet.
All family activities now revolve around the new center of the house. With several children in the family, the addition at times rings
with the laughter and chatter of a busy family. The room is generously lighted by the ridge skylights. The addition responded to a
modest budget and Carl chose to construct the deck himself with some assistance from his father. |
