A Contemporary Beach House

A guest is greeted at the entry gate with a custom German Wire Haired Pointer dog latch, getting a taste of unique and whimsical design details to come. This contemporary beach house was designed to exhibit artwork, emphasize music, and take advantage of spectacular water views. Geometric forms play off one another to create dramatic spaces.

The architect and the wife, who holds an art degree, collaborated on interior design elements and searched out local artists and craftspersons who contributed decorative elements to the home. The central axis through the house features three circular spaces; the entry foyer, gallery for artwork, and focal point for the grand piano. The entry and gallery spaces open skyward with pyramid-shaped skylights which dramatically light the couple's art collection of John Lewis glass. Composed of circular walls and only four 90 degree corners, this home required precise attention to detail from the layout of the foundation through the final installation of glass marble door knobs made by Jay Jack of Maslach glass.

The lines and curves of the home flow as naturally as the water and hillsides beyond. The living room low voltage lighting was created by Fritz Neidhardt to delight the eye as well as to carry the eye from the inside of the home out to the water view. The unique dining table was designed by the architect to play off the curves and angles of the home. The special German 2'x3' ceramic kitchen tiles are laid out to minimize grout lines for easy maintainance and once again to play with geometric angles.

The master bedroom headboard wall has a faux painted motif which is part of a unifying design motif of the etched french doors, the entry gate, and master bath medicine cabinets. The sumptuous master bath has a circular glass block shower with custom Winnie Crittenden wind tiles, cobalt blue etched glass countertops, and a unique floating vanity mirror. The guest shower enclosure has a custom etched pattern of waves to match the tile pattern around the tub. This is a home filled with details which delight the eye and create surprises in every room, every curve and turn.
